Post Offices

The Government recently announced that 2,500 Post Offices are to be closed across the UK in an attempt to stem the losses which are running at around £2m every week. Since 1997 over 4,000 post offices – accounting for around a third of the post office network – have closed. It appears that the Government is convinced that the Post Office cannot be made a success and is content to manage its decline. I believe however that the Post Office can be a success if we allow it to develop as a proper business and allow it to extend new opportunities for its offices to attract more customers. As it is, the Government seems to want to prevent it from diversifying and continue to pump in inefficient state subsidies.

There are a wide range of services that could be offered from the Post Office which would help to reverse the numbers using their facilities. I am actively encouraging the Government to look at this opportunity to free the service from the stranglehold that they have over it.
